Abia State witnessed a historic moment today as the inaugural Abia International Film Festival (ABIFF) was unveiled, drawing a distinguished audience including government officials, media representatives, and prominent filmmakers. Dr. Alex Elekwa, the visionary President and Founder of ABIFF, delivered an impassioned welcome address that underscored the festival’s mission to elevate arts, culture, and science through the transformative medium of cinema.
Driven by Dr. Elekwa’s global experiences and his commitment to nurturing local storytelling, ABIFF aims to empower Abia State’s youth through comprehensive film production training. Recognizing Nollywood’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy, ABIFF seeks to cultivate a new generation of filmmakers capable of merging artistic innovation with economic development.
The establishment of an international film festival in Abia State marks a significant milestone, made possible through collaborative efforts spearheaded by Mr. Hope Obioma Opara, President and Founder of the Eko International Film Festival. With over 15 years of experience organizing the esteemed Ekoiff in Lagos, Mr. Opara’s appointment as Festival Director reaffirms ABIFF’s potential to attract global attention and investment.
Industry luminaries such as Mr. Wisdom Nwankwo, a distinguished figure in Nollywood, will play a crucial role in mentoring emerging talents. Mr. Ahamefule Ndubuisi, National Vice President of the Creative Designers Guild of Nigeria (CDGN), assumes the role of Festival Coordinator, supported by ABIFF’s Legal Adviser, Mrs. Ihunanya Chisom Onuagha, and Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Thompson Nsisongabasi.
ABIFF is poised to become a premier global platform for film premieres, attracting filmmakers worldwide to showcase their works annually. Beyond its cultural significance, the festival aims to elevate Abia State as a top-tier tourist destination while fostering economic growth in the film industry.
Dr. Elekwa called upon the Abia State Government to pledge robust support and collaboration, emphasizing ABIFF’s potential to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage and scenic filming locations on the global stage.
This year’s festival theme, “Cultivating Abia’s Next Generation of Film Creatives,” reflects ABIFF’s commitment to nurturing cinematic innovation and creative expression across Abia State.
In closing, Dr. Alex Elekwa reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to ABIFF’s success, heralding a new era of cultural prominence and creative vitality for Abia State.
